Re-Visiting Train Mountain: Day 5
Our plan on this day was to visit Crater Lake but once again, traffic was snarled on the road up. This time we wasted no time in turning around and changing plans, so Train Mountain it was. I had visited it with my buddy in 2022, and had a blast, so we decided to check it out. As Jennifer said "I've seen lakes. This was much cooler". So join us for a ride at Train Mountain, and through some of Oregon's beautiful forests.

A Day Of Delays Heading To Klamath Falls
Переглядів 5777 годин тому
Day 4 of the vacation was very jumbled. We hit stopped traffic four times for a total of three hours going to Lassen, and another half hour on the way to Klamath Falls. I won't make you watch that! Stopped cars and pine trees look the same everywhere!.
Across Nevada Including the UP Caliente, Nevada Depot

We got out of St. George a bit later than we expected, but it worked out fine. I REALLY wanted to check out the depot at Caliente, Nevada, but it was undergoing a remodel and was closed, so I broke out the drone. Once done, we hit the desolate hiways across the state and made it to our lodging destination of Bridgeport, Ca. at about 7 pm.

I had never even operated a drone, nor had I seriously considered getting one before RUKO contacted me with the offer of a drone to use for my channel. I was hesitant but I am SO happy I took them up on their offer. Once I figured out the drone-phone-controller connections, the rest was pretty easy, and a LOT of fun! This video is about the drone and my experience learning to fly. I hope you en...
Checking Out Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks

Day 2 of the vacation saw us leaving Cedar City, Utah and heading up to Bryce Canyon, then down to Zion National Park. Both were spectacular and the drives to, between, and back to St. George, were also very scenic. I highly recommend visiting these parks...OFF SEASON!

A Cold Day For Railfans at Tehachapi

Tehachapi was surprised with a snow storm in late March and I just happened to be working at the depot that day, so...you know. My oldest grandson, Aidan, started playing guitar about two years ago and has really improved. He is taking lessons, and plans on studying music theory. I don't play much these days due to time constraints and worsening arthritis in my hands, so I decided to start handing my axes down to him. I'm hanging on to two of them, and if I want to play the others, I know where they are. So come along a...

Back in the day we would go to top of Oak Creek Rd and inner tube down the snow. Haven’t seen snow there like that in decades. Maybe if we had started using non-carbon energy sooner we’d still have snow.

Also, sometimes when demand is low or for other operational reasons, some windmills may be offline at times. Most of the time though 95% or higher are working just fine. The 35 year smaller Mitsubishi mills are nearing retirement and those old ones are now mostly inoperative.

  • @Herlongian

There is seed money to get the windmills going but not ongoing. These windmills are highly profitable. Some of them have been there for over 30 years. The kids coming up today are going to need a way to make electricity. Burning oil and coal is not only bad for the environment, those products are finite.

I saw an up close photo of three empty well cars derailed. It looks like a case of stringlining. Pulling light, empty car through a tight curve in the middle of a heavy train is a no-no.

Ah good ole K-Falls. Back in the my rail riding days I traveled through K-Falls. I got some pictures of the S.P. yard there and I also managed to get a photo of a very large blue Great Northern boxcar. Another time while riding though I was extremely lucky to get an Oregon, California, and Eastern train coming into the S.P. yard. Its a cold son of a gun there in winter.

Mark, I was there in the 60s as a kid on the family vacation. The devastated area even back then didn’t look that devastated. And that was over 50 years ago. Lessen Is kind of a strange park, never really that popular and it pales in comparison to what Saint Helens national monument is. You should try going there if you get the chance, it’s pretty spectacular even 40 years after the eruption. Back ups on 395 due to an accident? Seems to happen every time I ever take a trip on that road.

As an N-scale BNSF modeler with very long trains, I have attempted to use an additional unit on the end of trains. The results were much like you described; the end locomotive can push too much, causing a “bulge” or “buckle” and derailment following. Especially, if the train was in a curve and the trailing end-unit was still on straight track.

  • @ccrx6700
    @ccrx6700 День тому

When our end of train unit loses signal it shuts down all functions, but that dont mean it dont screw up once inawhile either 😅

I had a Muzak service route around Nevada in the 80s. Caliente is one of my favorite stops (as a railfan, it is a great place to see trains on that subdivision.). I agree that US 50 is not the loneliest road in America (not by a long shot). I elect US 6 between Tonopah and Ely (pronounced like an eel with a Y on the end :). Many years ago there were a couple of stops like Warm Springs and Current but as of now I believe they are closed. A long hot dry road through little civilization and even less water. Surprisingly there is an oil field (with no services available) in Railroad Valley (no railroad that I've found) East of the Junction at Warm Springs (again no services and no potable water). I just love the wide open spaces that are Central Nevada but beware. Bring lots of your own water :).. Thanks for the video.

Enjoy all your videos, but this one was special. Too bad about Caliente, I'm sure you know the history of the place. We were there and stayed at the Shady Hotel. There was a small rustic restaurant, walking distance from the Depot. In the restaurant, assume it's still there. The story how the UP and the Salt Lake railroads met, and a Gun Fight erupted over who had the right of way. One man was killed. A US Marshall was sent to oversee the matter, and never resolved who shot the railroad worker. The dispute was settled in Federal Court. Only wildlife we saw were herds of wild horses. (Guess I'm not the only one that went over the speed limit on those long straight roads.)
